PETER BROWN AKA PETE THE STREET

Pete’s first major project in Glasgow was in 2023 when (at the invitation of Banksy) five of Pete’s paintings featured in the popular Banksy Cut & Run Exhibition (June to August 2023) at Glasgow’s GOMA (The paintings featured one of Banksy’s installations – the Valentine Day Mascara, Margate, February 2023).

His involvement in this show brought him to Glasgow, which stirred his love for the city as a subject - he loves the history, the architecture and the friendliness of the people. It gave him the idea to paint a new series of Glasgow paintings alongside a book that is set to be released in November 2026 (see image below).

Our gallery was very fortunate to be approached by Pete earlier this year to show the body of work for that series.

Pete is a character and force of nature – instantly likeable. He carries the nickname ‘Pete the Street’ because he is an all weather ‘en plein air’ painter of street scenes and city landscapes. He works directly from the subject (never from photographs) in any weather conditions. We have watched him spend his weeks in Glasgow throughout the Winter and into the Spring and Summer. You can see in his paintings the changes in conditions (the cold, the rain through to the blue skies).

Pete is a character, always chirpy and he displays a relentlessness that carries him through. His personality is humble, humorous and cheekily sarcastic – traits that are well suited to his encounters on the streets of Glasgow.

A highly qualified British IMPRESSIONIST painter, his portrayals of Glasgow represent an outstanding collection of works capturing a sense of the city’s developed character and its everyday life.

Peter Brown was born in 1967 and studied at Manchester Polytechnic (1985-1990). We have enjoyed the chance to work with a bit of a STAR (204,000 Instagram followers) and certainly one of Britain’s (contemporary) CELEBRITY painters

BRIAN HENDERSON

Brian Henderson was born in 1952.

He studied at the Edinburgh College of Art (1971-75) and gained a Distinction in his Post-Graduate year (ECA) 1975-76.

He then took his teaching qualification (1978-79) at Moray House, Edinburgh and re-located to Shetland, where he taught Art and Design at Scalloway JH School from 1979-2011. After 35 years on Shetland, Brian returned to Edinburgh in 2014.

There was no particular art influence within his family, but Brian was clear ‘his whole life’ that it was always going to be a career in art.

His early work was more traditionally based figurative and still life’s. He then developed an interest in novelty/kitsch ornaments and figurines, such as Homer and Betty Boop before moving on to the adventures of Tintin and more recently Walt Disney characters. Henderson loves to browse second-hand shops for any materials on his source characters.

Brian creates wonderful compositions that tap into the various characters within the cartoon and comic genre. Characters that many of our generation grew up with.

In our experience, Brian’s work (the technique dictates that he paints a very limited number of pieces) is in very high demand. His clever use of an entertainment subject to create his own entertainment makes his work instantly popular. We also find that his audience always marvel at the artistic precision that he displays in his paintings.

This type of work provides a measure of light relief within any collection. It stirs happy memories of growing up and the lessons that we learned when we sought to build our own personality and values using the good and bad in the various characters that were presented.

We all enjoy a bit of fun in our lives, and purchasing a Henderson painting is a manifestation of that.

EUAN McGREGOR PAI

Euan was born in 1976.

He graduated from the Glasgow School of Art (1994-98).

Euan was surrounded by art within his family. His Father was an Architect, his Mother was an Art Teacher, who also tutored at GSA and his sister Mhairi McGregor RSW PAI is also an artist.

He won the Royal Glasgow Institute travelling scholarship in his graduation year and then spent development time in Barcelona and Aragon, painting coastal villages and homesteads.

McGregor entered the teaching profession in 2003, teaching at Paisley Grammar and now Johnston High. He specialises in teaching photography.

Euan was awarded his PAI in 2014.

At art school he trained in printmaking. While he now paints, on occasion he will incorporate elements of print and relief into his paintings to vary the surface. He likes to be graphical and favours a feeling of flatness in his paintings.

Euan has always been interested in the architecture and buildings as a subject with an absence of people. He prefers empty and no human presence.

In particular, he enjoys studying buildings that have a history, which has drawn him to a series on old Swimming Lido’s and more recently Distilleries. Euan also likes to include water/the sea and elements of open space to enhance his compositions.

McGregor’s landscapes are uniquely distinctive and atmospheric. His approach to the representation of buildings is very geometric and graphical (pared), which underpins a sense of modern approach rather than being too literal (classical).

He also restricts his palette to add his own version of (almost) cinematic qualities and dramatic effect. You know that the painting is part of Euan McGregor’s theatre, the minute you see one.

Euan is making a wonderful contribution to the development of Scottish contemporary art with his constructions. He is relatively new to our gallery but, in our experience, he has already made a significant impact on the collections of the clients who have taken the step of adding one or more of his works to their collection
