NEW CHRIS DUNCAN

Chris Duncan (b.1989) studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (2007-2011).

He is a composer and musician (keybords, guitar and vocals - currently signed to FatCat Records).

He also paints (an interest stirred by his Album Covers). We were attracted by his alternative and modern vision of our landscape.

PAM SCOTT

NEW ARTIST

REAL GONE KID
A claustrophobic composition in which a young homeless boy is huddled at the feet of passersby who are oblivious, both to his presence and his predicament.

Their preoccupation with material possessions and designer labels contrasts with him having so very little. The difference in their status is referenced in the same scarf worn by the boy and the well-heeled woman.

WAR + PEACE = PEOPLE
A deconstructed view of the People's Palace and Winter Gardens, Glasgow. A nostalgic image of a well-loved building, holding the collective memory of the people it represents, but with a darker side, referenced in the Doomsday Clock. There's a sense of atrophy, with the Winter Gardens now being closed down, but nature continues to flourish. Perhaps the people of Glasgow do too !

NOTHING EVER HAPPENS
The consequences of people doing nothing when a culture of apathy allows entropy to creep in.
Nature quickly runs free and takes over, causing collapse - 'Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; mere anarchy is loosed upon the world' (WB Yeats). Lyrics from Del Amitri's 'Nothing Ever Happens' are referenced throughout e.g.: traffic lights turned to stop and the billboarding advertising unneeded products. The telephone exchanges lead to jumbled wires, signifying the breakdown of communications that would be so devastating to 21st Century humanity. The Doomsday Clock, set at the current 100 seconds to midnight, symbolizes how close to the edge we are now. The cockroach, the consummate survivor, also references Kafka's Gregor Samsa, who suffered the terrible consequences of inaction.

FORMULA FOR ELEGANCE
An in-depth, holistic portrait of a long and principled life that has been lived, fully in harmony with nature, promoting peace and protection to the planet. The Fibonacci Sequence (the formula for elegance) is referenced in the unfurling Fern and the Butterfly, which is folded from the page in the Bible regarding the ration of cubits to build the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:10). The sitter is the late Dr Jim Taggart of Linn Botanic Gardens, Cove who based much of his garden design on the Golden Ration and was a committed member of CND. He is surrounded by some of his extensive plant collection with the pencil portrait in the villa window of his son, Jamie who died before him, commenting on how death is part of life.
