MEET JOE HARGAN DA PAI
On the OPENING DAY Saturday 15th October 2022 between 1.00pm and 4.00pm.
Joe Hargan (b.1952) studied at GSA (1970-74).
This was a period when the dominant teaching was landscape. In many ways Hargan pre-empted the figurative narrative revolution (Howson et al) of the 1980's.
A parody of MODERN CONCEPTUAL ART.
Hargan's striking art works contrast classically painted art (typically the old masters on the wall) with modern, conceptual art. You can stick anything (a hamburger, a dog, a person, a glass of
wine, some cakes etc.) on a pedestal and call it modern conceptual art.
The concept of Conceptual Art (a new phase in art reform) was first evinced when Marcel Duchamp's world famous readymade urinal 'Fountain' was submitted to a 1917 exhibition at the Society of
International Artists in New York. The question he was posing to the art establishment was, why does art needed to be defined by being on canvas ?
Hargan's powerful and unique masterpieces are packed full with rich multiple elements of content that you will enjoy (and notice new things in) for the years and decades to come.
Joe makes his theatrical vignettes modern by using a striking palette that transforms a beautifully painted, highly technical, classical form into a modern-relevant art statement.
His artistic gems are threaded with humour to make the viewer smile (his desired outcome) and are liked by all.
