JOE HARGAN DA PAI PPAI
Saturday 24th October to Sunday 1st November 2020 from 11.00am to 5.00pm daily.
Joe Hargan DA PAI (b.1952) is a force in Scottish contemporary art.
You are looking at work of seminal importance.
Why ?
Because we are looking at one of Scotland's most senior artists who had the benefit of a rigorous classical training (DA) at GSA (1970-74) but who chose to paint counter-period (the landscape
tradition).
You have the opportunity of extending beyond the landscape genre into an early example figurative narrative. On the face of it, Hargan's art might be framed in a classical style, but it is entirely
modern with it's parody of modern 'conceptual' art.
(Conceptual art is based on an object or idea rather than the traditional on-canvas form - for example, objects, installations, site specific art video, audio or performance art).
In his paintings, Hargan contrasts the background (classical art paintings) with his foreground, people (performance) and objects (cheeseburgers, cakes, brexit flags) on plinths or pedestals to mimic modern art (Tracey Emin - the Unmade Bed, Damien Hirst - the shark in the water tank).
Engaging, multi-layered compositions that the viewer has to unpick to understand and enjoy.
As the world (intellectually) moved beyond simple reproduction and engaged with metaphors and paintings with underlying narratives, Hargan will be recognised (alongside such notables as Bellany) for
being at the forefront of change within his period.
That is what makes him so important.
If you want to take the step into figurative art, Hargan represents a great opportunity. A senior artist positioned modernly !
A very rare combination.
The individual girl paintings are development studies for models to be included in the larger paintings.
Note also these make great pairs where you want a row of two (or three) impact paintings rather than one large painting.
