The gallery is also very lucky to have access to a NEW BODY OF WORK by the artist Hanna Kaciniel.

Hanna is (probably) Scotland's leading Pop Artist.
Her insightful studies of popular Scottish culture offer us a cheeky (post-modern) reflection on our age.
You are looking at one obvious thing/object, that might have a different underlying meaning !
By highlighting the small treats and indulgencies that we might have used in our everyday lives, she is posing the question to our consciences - are they good for you or are they bad for you ? Do we or should we feel guilty ?

A wonderful observational eye !
Our popular culture.

Kaciniel (b.1978) was raised in Poland. The early years of her life were shaped on a highly controlled environment (a Communist regime) with a closed border (consumption, thought and life experiences were all controlled/dictated by the state system).
Now she can use that simplification/experience to look through a window into our lives. She can look at elements (icons) of modern (western) consumption that form part of the everyday western civilisation model that we now take for granted - elements that comfort us, indulge our ego's and keep us content ?
By casting this light over our existence (through her pop-culture paintings), she could also be posing a (clever) deeper question or stirring us to reflect/consider whether our uncontrolled (market economy) over-consumption habits are actually damaging us personally (physically/psychologically), are damaging our planet and damaging the vital balances within nature. In our modern (self-indulgent) lifestyles, have we lost our underlying sense of reality - our sight of the simple/basic life elements that we need and can survive on ?

Hanna's studies are hyper realistic. Within each object study, she faces enormous technical challenges to capture the various surfaces and the idiosynchrasies embedded within the character of the objects that she selects to paint (foil, reflections, glass, tin, baking, wrappers, egg yolk ..etc.
Her technical execution is exceptional. Kaciniel is also a very likeable individual and her warm personality is washed all over her careful object selections, style of content/presentation and even the painting titles - she is an artistic natural (entertainer) and likes to make people smile !
