SIMON LAURIE RSW RGI

Saturday 20th January to Sunday 28th January 2018 from 11.00am to 5.00pm daily.

MEET THE ARTIST On OPENING DAY Saturday 20th January 2018 between 1.30pm and 4.00pm.

Laurie (b.1964) trained at GSA 1982-1988 (BA Hons. Dip). He was elected RSW 1991 and RGI 2000.

His abstracts are exceptional. In my view, he is an uncompromising genius.
Many in the contemporary Scottish Art Market are scared of abstraction ... explain it to me ! I dont understand it !. Abstraction is part of a world movement (1940/50's) that challenged the classical view that art needs to be defined by a canvas, filled with paint, that is photographic or semi-photographic (representational - it represents a familiar object or scene). TATE - "Abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colours, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect".

And no, a child could not do these ! Laurie studied (6 years) and was influenced by the St Ives Group (1940/50's modern artists/abstractionists including Ben Nicholson, Patrick Heron, Peter Lanyon and Sir Terry Frost). You need to have a deep understanding of the process to be able to produce the colour, form, gestural marks and sense of rhythym that Laurie achieves in his paintings. Stand in front of one of his works and your instincts will take over - there is no need to understand it - to sight familiar buildings, roads or beaches or people. Just enjoy the modernism, the freshness and the visual balance that he achieves. My eldest daughter Kirsty recently acquired a Simon Laurie abstract and it has rapidly become her favourite painting in her collection. It is a modern, statement piece and looks incredibly powerful up on her wall. I was very proud of the sophistication of her art taste for one so young.

But then Laurie will be more representative of what that generation will buy - he is the future of modern Scottish Art.

Any serous collector of Scottish Art should have at least one of his artworks within their collection. There is no age barrier to enjoyment !

Please come and see them on the wall at the show. Perhaps you will understand them better when you see the real thing !
