COLIN BROWN
Saturday 20th January to Sunday 28th January 2018 from 11.00am to 5.00pm daily.
MEET THE ARTIST on OPENING DAY Saturday 20th January 2018, from 11.00am to 4.00pm.
Colin Brown (b.1962) studied at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee (BA Hons 1982-86) and thereafter (Postgraduate Diploma 1986-87).
Brown is an internationally renowned collage (or found object) artist. Indeed he is listed/featured in key worldwide collage publications alongside such noteworthy's as Duchamp, Picasso and Rauschenberg.
To his remarkable credit/endorsement he won the Pollock Krasner Award NY in 1996, awarded by the Jackson Pollock Foundation.
This served to highlight that we had someone very special in Scotland. The problem is that our own internal recognition mechanisms also have to waken up to the fact that we have a modern art specialist/genius on our very own doorstep.
The approach is modern. It relies on found object, Global icons include Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Prince.
Appreciation requires a sophistication in art understanding. Rather than (old form) photographic-based representation, the artist (modern form) assembles his found objects on the canvas/board to
create his conversation. Disparate fragments become one and (when in front of the work) the viewer is transfixed and made to slow down/pause, long enough to read the various elements. You can also
return many times, on each occasion noticing new or different nuances.
The effect achieved is the perfect metaphor and an outcome of interest/engagement and a calmness results.
Please call 0786 7800 935 if you would like to BUY or RESERVE one of his paintings.

I had been reading about halftone photography, where an image is made up of dots. This brought back memories of looking at football photographs in my father's newspaper as a boy - I was always fascinated by the image being made in this way to reflect light and tone. The image of Scarlett Johansson is simply an example of this.
BLACKSTAR
2017
Acrylic and Mixed Media
60cm x 60cm
£1750
2016 was a monumental year for the passing of many celebrated people - for me personally the most important was David Bowie. This work is simply a homage to the great man. By chance I was in Berlin the month after he died and I visited the very moving shrine all over the walls and pavement around his old apartment in Hauptstrasse.
ZEBRA
2017
Acrylic and Mixed Media
64cm x 122cm
£3200
Although the title is self apparent with the Zebra in the front middle, the painting also balances two images of figures seen from behind. On the left, the film maker Jim Jarmusch and on the right an excerpt from the Caspar David Friedrich painting "Wanderer above the sea of fog".
STROZZI
2016
Acrylic and Mixed Media
120cm x 95cm
£3750
A large piece inspired by imagery found in Berlin. As in many other urban works, flowers and birds are included to bring nature back into play. The centre piece is a large yellow poster fragment overlaid with and image of Filippo Strozzi - part of the Florentine banking family who were bitter rivals of the more celebrated Medici family.
ZAPATA
2017
Acrylic and Mixed Media
120cm x 100cm
£3750
One of my series of paintings in homage to Berlin. The title references a fabulous old music venue called Bar Zapata which is sadly now closed. It was part of the legendary Tacheles building - a huge artists squat comprising dozens of studios. Closed by the Council a few years ago as the gentrification of Berlin continues.
