Nobel prize-winning author Herman Hesse is portrayed reflecting on the various aspects of his novel "Steppenwolf", a story that describes the existential search for the meaning of man in 1920's
Germany.
The strange building is the Miner's Institute in the Ayrshire village of Muirkirk where the artist currently resides.
Now moored at the Transport Museum on the Clyde, the Glenlee was launched in Glasgow in 1896. For much of its working life the ship was called 'Galatea' after the statue who came to life and fell
in love with the creator of Greek mythology.
In this painting, Galatea comes to life once agin to guide the tall ship to safety during a storm.

Valerie graduated from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1985 with a First Class Hons in Illustration.
She is currently Head of Art at Ashfield Girls' High School in Belfast. McKeag loves to (expressively) capture the transient effects of light. She likes to depict the light hitting the unnoticed corners of a city, areas where many people would pass without a glance, which to her, are beautiful.
